What employers ask for
The skills these listings keep naming
Interview questions worth rehearsing
With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for
Walk me through how you would run your book of business in the first 90 days.
Show a triage plan: segment accounts by renewal date and health, meet the at-risk ones first, and learn the product deeply. Structure beats enthusiasm.
Tell me about an account you saved from churning.
Name the warning signs, the root cause you uncovered, and the specific plan that turned it around. End with the renewal result and what you systematized.
How do you drive adoption when the customer's team ignores the product?
Go beyond training sessions: find the executive sponsor, tie usage to their stated business goal, and identify the workflow blocker honestly.
How do you handle expansion conversations without feeling like a salesperson?
Frame expansion as solving the next problem: it grows from demonstrated value. Describe partnering with sales and knowing when the account is not ready.
A customer demands a feature that is not on the roadmap. What do you do?
Show honest expectation-setting, digging into the underlying need, offering workarounds, and advocating internally with evidence rather than promises.
What metrics have you owned, and what were your results?
Come with numbers: gross and net revenue retention, NPS, adoption rates, or book size. Know what drove the number, not just the number.
Describe coordinating support, product, and sales around one difficult account.
Show that you were the quarterback: a single plan, clear owners, and one voice to the customer. Internal diplomacy is half this job.
Resume tips that move the needle
For customer success managers specifically — generic advice costs you here
Lead with retention numbers: gross revenue retention, net revenue retention, and the ARR or account count of your book.
Show expansion contribution, such as upsell revenue sourced or influenced, to signal commercial ability.
Name your tools: Gainsight, ChurnZero, Catalyst, or Totango, plus Salesforce or HubSpot fluency.
Specify your segment, for example enterprise with 15 accounts or SMB with 200, since motion differs completely.
Include one or two saved-account or adoption stories with concrete outcomes rather than listing responsibilities.
