Interview questions worth rehearsing

With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for

How is program management different from project management?

Frame programs as ongoing and outcome-oriented across multiple projects, while projects have fixed scope and end dates. Use an example from your own work.

Describe a program you ran across multiple teams.

Explain the shared goal, how many workstreams you coordinated, and the mechanisms you used to keep them aligned, such as shared milestones and a single status view.

How do you handle a dependency between two teams that is blocking progress?

Show you make dependencies visible early, negotiate sequencing directly with both leads, and escalate with options rather than complaints.

How do you report program status to executives?

Describe a concise format: goal, health, top risks, decisions needed. Emphasize surfacing what leadership must act on, not everything you know.

Tell me about a time you had to kill or pause a workstream.

Show that you used data to make the case, handled the affected team with respect, and redirected capacity toward the program goal.

How do you keep a long-running program from drifting away from its original goal?

Mention regular checkpoints against the business case, a change-control habit for scope, and re-validating assumptions as conditions shift.

Resume tips that move the needle

For program managers specifically — generic advice costs you here

01

Describe programs by their business outcome and total scope, such as budget and number of workstreams, not by ceremony lists.

02

Show altitude: pair one executive-level result with one example of unblocking teams in the details.

03

Quantify coordination scale, for example the number of teams, vendors, or regions you aligned.

04

Include a governance artifact you built, like a risk framework or reporting cadence, that outlived the program.

05

If your programs were technical, name the domains so recruiters can match you to platform, infra, or launch roles.
