What employers ask for
The skills these listings keep naming
Interview questions worth rehearsing
With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for
Describe your classroom management approach.
Lead with prevention: clear routines, relationships, and engagement, then describe how you handle disruption calmly and consistently. Avoid sounding punitive.
How do you differentiate for students at very different levels in one class?
Give concrete structures, such as tiered tasks, flexible grouping, or choice boards, and one example of a struggling student who progressed.
Walk me through a lesson you are proud of.
Structure the answer: objective, hook, activity, assessment, and what the student work showed. Reflect briefly on what you would change.
How do you use assessment data to adjust instruction?
Show a cycle: exit tickets or quizzes, spotting patterns, reteaching in small groups. Name a real standard or skill you retaught.
Tell me about a difficult parent conversation and how you handled it.
Show that you listened first, shared specific observations rather than judgments, and agreed on a plan you both followed up on.
How do you support students who have experienced trauma or are disengaged?
Mention relationships, predictable routines, and working with counselors. One quiet success story is more convincing than a framework name.
Why do you teach, and why this school?
Be genuine and specific about the school: its population, program, or values. Committees can tell a recycled answer immediately.
Resume tips that move the needle
For teachers specifically — generic advice costs you here
State your teaching license, endorsement areas, and grade bands clearly, plus praxis or state exam status if newly certified.
Quantify impact where you can: growth percentages on benchmark assessments, pass rates, or attendance improvements.
Name the curricula and platforms you have taught with, such as Eureka Math, Wit and Wisdom, or Canvas and Google Classroom.
Include duties beyond your classroom: coaching, clubs, committee work, or mentoring student teachers.
Tailor your subject and grade emphasis to each posting; a generic K-12 resume reads as unfocused to principals.
