Interview questions worth rehearsing

With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for

Tell me about a product you designed from problem to launch.

Cover how the problem was found, how you narrowed solutions, and what happened after launch. Metrics and iteration matter most.

How do you decide what to build when users ask for many things?

Show a prioritization lens, weighing user impact, business value, and effort, and give an example of saying no well.

How do you use data in your design process?

Pair quantitative signals like funnels and A/B tests with qualitative research, and note the limits of each.

Describe a time your design failed after launch. What did you do?

Pick a real miss, explain what the data showed, and how you iterated. Owning failure calmly is a senior signal.

How do you collaborate with engineers under tight constraints?

Talk about designing within technical realities, negotiating scope cuts that protect the core experience, and staying involved through build.

Whiteboard exercise: improve the onboarding for an app of our choice.

Ask clarifying questions first, state assumptions, and think aloud. The interviewer is grading your reasoning, not the sketch.

Resume tips that move the needle

For product designers specifically — generic advice costs you here

01

Frame each role around product outcomes, such as activation or retention changes, rather than screens delivered.

02

Show range across the full process by naming discovery, definition, and delivery work in your bullets.

03

Link case studies that explain your decisions; product design portfolios are read, not just viewed.

04

Call out cross-functional work with PMs and engineers, since collaboration is heavily screened.

05

Mention experimentation experience, like A/B tests you designed for, to signal comfort with data.
