Which regulatory frameworks have you worked with directly?

Be specific and honest, whether that is BSA/AML, HIPAA, SOX, OSHA, or state insurance rules, and describe what you actually did within each rather than listing acronyms.

Tell me about a time you had to tell a senior leader no.

This is the defining question. Show that you explained the risk in business terms, offered a compliant alternative, and documented the decision either way.

Walk me through a risk assessment you led.

Describe scoping, gathering data across departments, scoring likelihood and impact, and how findings changed controls or priorities. Method and follow-through both matter.

How do you run an internal investigation while protecting fairness and confidentiality?

Show process discipline: defined scope, documented interviews, evidence handling, no premature conclusions, and appropriate escalation to counsel or the board.

How do you make compliance training something employees do not just click through?

Talk about role-specific scenarios, short formats, and real cases from your industry. Mention measuring behavior change, not completion rates.

A monitoring report shows a pattern that might be a violation. What are your first steps?

Show calm sequencing: verify the data, preserve records, assess reporting obligations and deadlines, and brief the right people without alarm or delay.

How do you stay current as regulations change?

Name your actual sources: agency bulletins, industry associations, counsel updates, and give a recent regulatory change you operationalized.
