Interview questions worth rehearsing

With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for

Walk me through your process when a claim is denied.

Show a system: read the denial code, check eligibility and coding, correct and resubmit or appeal, and log the root cause so it stops recurring.

How do you prioritize your accounts receivable follow-up?

Talk about working by aging bucket and dollar value, hitting timely filing deadlines first. Numbers-driven answers stand out.

What coding sets and payer types have you worked with?

Name CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS, plus payer mix such as Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial. Be honest about specialties you know well.

How do you handle a patient upset about a bill they do not understand?

Show patience: explain the EOB in plain language, verify the claim was processed correctly, and offer payment plans where policy allows.

Tell me about a billing error you found and fixed.

Pick an example with a measurable result, such as recovered revenue or a corrected fee schedule, and describe how you prevented repeats.

How do you keep up with payer rule changes?

Mention payer bulletins, clearinghouse alerts, and rechecking high-volume codes after policy updates. Give one recent change you adapted to.

05

Resume tips that move the needle

For medical billers specifically — generic advice costs you here

01

List certifications such as CPB, CPC, or CMRS and your knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding.

02

Quantify results: clean claim rate, denial rate reduction, days in AR, or monthly claim volume you handled.

03

Name your billing platforms and clearinghouses, for example Kareo, AdvancedMD, Epic Resolute, or Availity.

04

Specify the specialties you have billed, since payer rules differ sharply between, say, behavioral health and orthopedics.

05

Mention experience with appeals and payer audits, including a recovered-revenue figure if you have one.
