What employers ask for
The skills these listings keep naming
Interview questions worth rehearsing
With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for
What tasks fall within your scope of practice, and how do you handle requests outside it?
State your scope plainly for your state, then describe escalating to the RN. Knowing your limits is the point of the question.
Describe your experience with wound care and dressing changes.
Be specific about wound types, sterile technique, and documentation. If your experience is limited, say what you have done and what you want to learn.
How do you report a change in a patient's condition?
Mention a structured format like SBAR and give an example where your report changed the care plan. Timeliness matters as much as accuracy.
Tell me about caring for a resident who resisted care.
Show patience: slowing down, offering choices, and involving family or the care team. Avoid framing the resident as a problem.
How do you manage your time across a full assignment of residents?
Describe rounding patterns, clustering tasks, and protecting medication pass times. A concrete daily rhythm is convincing.
Why long-term care, or why this setting?
Tie your answer to the relationships and continuity the setting offers. Interviewers in LTC especially screen for retention.
Resume tips that move the needle
For licensed practical nurses specifically — generic advice costs you here
State your LPN or LVN license, the issuing state, and IV certification if you hold it; many postings filter on these first.
Name your care settings precisely, such as skilled nursing, rehab, or clinic, with typical resident counts per shift.
List the EHR or eMAR systems you have charted in, since facilities weigh switching costs.
Mention specific clinical skills like wound vac management, catheter care, or glucose monitoring rather than general duties.
If you are working toward an RN bridge program, note it briefly; many employers support the path.
