What employers ask for
The skills these listings keep naming
Interview questions worth rehearsing
With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for
Walk me through your evaluation of a new post-surgical patient.
Show a structured exam: history, precautions, objective measures, and how you set functional goals with the patient. Mention respecting surgeon protocols.
How do you keep a patient engaged with a home exercise program they keep skipping?
Talk about shrinking the program to a few meaningful exercises, tying them to the patient's own goals, and checking barriers without judgment.
Describe a patient who was not progressing. What did you change?
Demonstrate clinical reasoning: reassessing, questioning the diagnosis, adjusting load or frequency, and knowing when to refer back to the physician.
How do you manage productivity expectations with quality of care?
Be candid: efficient documentation habits, smart scheduling, and where your line is. Clinics ask because burnout and shortcuts are real risks.
What is your experience with documentation for insurance and Medicare?
Mention defensible documentation, showing skilled need and progress with objective measures, and familiarity with visit limits and G-codes or current equivalents.
Which patient populations are you most comfortable with, and where do you want to grow?
Be honest about your depth, such as orthopedics or neuro, and name a genuine growth area. Clinics value self-aware clinicians over broad claims.
Resume tips that move the needle
For physical therapists specifically — generic advice costs you here
List your DPT, state PT license, and board certifications such as OCS or NCS prominently; they are primary screening filters.
Specify settings and caseload, for example outpatient orthopedics at 12-14 patients per day, or inpatient rehab with stroke and TBI.
Quantify outcomes where you can: average visits per episode, patient satisfaction scores, or return-to-sport rates.
Name your documentation systems (WebPT, Epic, Clinicient) and note clean audit or compliance history if applicable.
Include continuing education with clinical weight, such as dry needling certification, McKenzie, or vestibular training.
