Interview questions worth rehearsing

With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for

A system is running but not cooling. Walk me through your diagnosis.

Show the sequence: filters and airflow first, then charge, superheat and subcooling, and electrical components. Ruling out the simple causes first signals experience.

What EPA 608 certification level do you hold?

State it directly, ideally Universal. If you also hold NATE or manufacturer certifications, this is the moment to list them.

How do you handle refrigerant recovery and the newer A2L refrigerants?

Describe proper recovery procedure and any experience with R-454B or R-32 handling requirements. Awareness of the refrigerant transition reads well.

Tell me about a callback you got. What went wrong and what did you change?

Own it briefly, explain the missed cause, and describe the habit you added, like verifying charge by measurement instead of rule of thumb.

What is your experience with heat pumps and mini-split systems?

Be specific about brands installed and serviced, inverter board diagnostics, and cold-climate installs. Demand for this experience keeps rising.

How do you talk a homeowner through a repair-versus-replace decision?

Explain giving honest numbers on age, refrigerant type, and efficiency, then letting the customer choose. Trust drives maintenance-agreement sales.

Resume tips that move the needle

For hvac technicians specifically — generic advice costs you here

01

Put your EPA 608 certification level in the first line; Universal is the strongest signal.

02

Add NATE, OSHA 10, and manufacturer certifications such as Carrier, Trane, or Mitsubishi.

03

Split residential and commercial experience, and name equipment: RTUs, heat pumps, mini-splits, furnaces.

04

Quantify service work with calls per day, first-visit fix rate, or maintenance agreements sold.

05

Mention experience with the A2L refrigerant transition (R-454B, R-32) to show you are current.

06

List diagnostic tools you own, from digital manifolds to combustion analyzers.
