Interview questions worth rehearsing

With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for

Walk me through an app you built end to end.

Cover the full arc — data model, API, UI, deployment — briefly, then go deep on the hardest part. This shows both breadth and judgment about where the difficulty lived.

Where do you put validation: client, server, or both?

Both, with the server as the source of truth. Explaining why — the client can be bypassed, but client checks improve UX — covers what they are testing.

How do you decide what to build first when you own the whole feature?

Show product thinking: a thin vertical slice that works end to end, then iteration. This is the core skill full stack roles hire for.

A page is slow. How do you find out whether it is frontend or backend?

Describe isolating layers: network tab, API timing, database queries. A clear diagnostic path is the answer they want.

How do you keep frontend and backend types or contracts in sync?

Mention shared types, OpenAPI, or end-to-end TypeScript, and the failure mode you are preventing — silent contract drift.

Which end of the stack are you stronger on, and how do you cover the gap?

Answer honestly and show how you compensate — code review, learning plans, leaning on specialists. Claiming equal mastery of everything is a red flag.

Resume tips that move the needle

For full stack developers specifically — generic advice costs you here

01

Present projects as end-to-end stories: what you shipped, the stack on both sides, and the outcome.

02

Make your primary stack obvious at a glance — full stack resumes fail when they read as a grab bag.

03

Include deployment and operations details (Docker, CI, cloud host); owning production is part of the pitch.

04

If you shipped something real people use, lead with it, even if it is small — a live product with users beats a tutorial clone.

05

Flag your deeper side (frontend-leaning or backend-leaning) so teams can slot you correctly.
