What employers ask for
The skills these listings keep naming
Interview questions worth rehearsing
With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for
Two drivers call in with problems at the same time a customer is on hold. What do you do?
Show triage: safety issues first, then time-critical loads, then the callback. Naming an order calmly is the whole answer.
How do you match drivers to loads?
Mention available hours, location, equipment type, and driver strengths. Show that you plan a day ahead, not load by load.
How do you keep drivers on your side while pushing to hit schedules?
Talk about honest ETAs, respecting hours of service, and going to bat for drivers when a plan is unrealistic. Trust is the dispatcher's real tool.
What dispatch or tracking software have you used?
Name the systems and what you tracked in them. If you learned one quickly, say how long it took; adaptability matters.
Tell me about a delivery you saved that was heading for failure.
Give a specific rescue: a re-route, a swapped driver, a renegotiated window. End with the outcome and what the customer heard from you.
How do you document your decisions during a chaotic shift?
Explain your logging habit, whether in the TMS or shift notes, so the next dispatcher and management can reconstruct what happened.
Resume tips that move the needle
For dispatchers specifically — generic advice costs you here
Quantify your board: drivers managed, loads dispatched per day, or region covered.
Name your dispatch and ELD software, such as McLeod, TMW, Samsara, or Motive.
Show on-time performance numbers for routes you managed.
Mention hours-of-service knowledge explicitly; it separates freight dispatchers from schedulers.
Include after-hours or weekend dispatch experience if you have it, since coverage flexibility is prized.
