What employers ask for
The skills these listings keep naming
Interview questions worth rehearsing
With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for
Walk me through how you manage deadlines across multiple active cases.
Describe a redundant system: court rules-based calendaring, reminders at set intervals, and double-checking computation of dates. A missed deadline story handled well is acceptable; a casual attitude is not.
What experience do you have drafting discovery and pleadings?
Be specific about documents: interrogatories, requests for production, deposition summaries, motions. Note that attorneys reviewed and signed, showing you know the supervision boundary.
How do you handle a client who asks you for legal advice?
The expected answer: acknowledge the question, explain you cannot give legal advice, and route it to the attorney promptly. This tests your understanding of unauthorized practice.
Describe your legal research process for an unfamiliar issue.
Show method: secondary sources first for orientation, then primary authority on Westlaw or Lexis, checking citations are still good law, and summarizing findings in a memo.
Tell me about preparing for a trial or major hearing.
Walk through exhibits, witness binders, subpoenas, and logistics, and how you kept the attorney supplied in the moment. Calm logistics under pressure is the trait being tested.
How do you handle confidential information, especially in a small community or firm?
Give concrete habits: clean desk, locked files, careful email addressing, and never discussing matters outside the team, plus conflict-check awareness.
What practice areas have you supported, and which do you prefer?
Be honest and map your experience to the firm's practice. Preferring their area with a reason grounded in the work reads as genuine fit.
Resume tips that move the needle
For paralegals specifically — generic advice costs you here
List your paralegal certificate or degree and credentials like NALA CP or ACP, plus notary commission if you hold one.
Name your practice areas and what you actually did in each, for example drafted discovery responses in personal injury litigation.
Show software fluency: Westlaw or Lexis, Clio, Relativity or other e-discovery platforms, and state e-filing systems.
Quantify caseload and output: number of active matters supported, filings per month, or pages of document review handled.
Highlight deadline and trial support work explicitly; reliability under court deadlines is the core hiring concern.
