What employers ask for
The skills these listings keep naming
Interview questions worth rehearsing
With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for
Walk me through an analysis you did that changed a supply chain decision.
Structure it as problem, data, method, and outcome, with a number at the end. The dollar or percentage impact is what they will remember.
How would you investigate a recurring stockout on a key SKU?
Show a systematic path: forecast accuracy, lead times, safety stock settings, and supplier performance, in that order. Avoid jumping to one cause.
What is your experience with ERP or planning systems?
Name the systems and the modules you actually worked in, and describe one report or process you built or improved.
How do you balance inventory carrying cost against service level?
Explain the tradeoff plainly and mention safety stock, demand variability, and lead time. A simple worked example beats theory.
Tell me about a time your analysis was challenged by operations. What happened?
Show that you listened, checked the assumptions they questioned, and either corrected the model or explained it better. Humility plus rigor.
Which metrics would you track weekly for a distribution network?
Pick a small set and defend it: fill rate, forecast accuracy, inventory turns, on-time delivery, and freight cost per unit are a solid core.
Resume tips that move the needle
For supply chain analysts specifically — generic advice costs you here
Quantify savings and service improvements, such as reducing freight cost 8% or raising fill rate to 98%.
Name your ERP and BI stack specifically: SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Tableau, or Power BI.
List SQL and advanced Excel explicitly; most screenings filter on both.
Mention APICS certifications like CPIM or CSCP, or note one in progress.
Show forecasting work with a measurable accuracy improvement, not just the activity.
