What employers ask for
The skills these listings keep naming
Interview questions worth rehearsing
With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for
Walk me through how you run a cycle count program.
Describe count frequency by ABC class, blind counts, recount thresholds, and how variances get posted. Structure is what they are listening for.
You find a 40-unit variance on a fast-moving SKU. How do you investigate?
Show a trail: recent receipts, picks, transfers, returns, and adjacent locations for mis-slots. Name the usual suspects before blaming theft.
What inventory accuracy levels have you maintained?
Give a real number and the method behind it. Accuracy in the high nineties with a cycle count program is a credible, strong answer.
How do you handle pressure to just adjust a count and move on?
Say you post adjustments only with documented cause, because untraced adjustments hide process failures. Integrity of the record is the job.
What WMS or ERP systems have you worked in?
Name them and describe one inventory process you improved inside the system, like slotting, count scheduling, or variance reporting.
Describe a process change you made that reduced shrink or errors.
Pick one change, explain the root cause it fixed, and quantify the improvement. One concrete story outweighs a list of duties.
Resume tips that move the needle
For inventory specialists specifically — generic advice costs you here
Lead with an inventory accuracy figure you achieved or maintained, such as 99.5% on cycle counts.
Name your WMS and ERP systems: SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or Fishbowl.
Show a shrink or variance reduction with a before-and-after number.
List Excel skills concretely, such as pivot tables and VLOOKUP for reconciliation.
Mention physical inventory events you led or supported, including headcount coordinated.
