Interview questions worth rehearsing

With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for

Walk me through a financial model you built.

Explain the decision the model supported, your key assumptions and drivers, and how you sanity-checked outputs. Mention what the business did with it.

How do you approach a variance between budget and actuals?

Show a drill-down habit: isolate price versus volume versus timing, talk to the budget owner, and separate one-time noise from a real trend.

How do the three financial statements connect?

Trace one example cleanly, such as net income flowing to retained earnings and the cash flow statement bridging to the cash balance. Practiced fluency is the point.

Tell me about a recommendation you made that leadership acted on.

Pick a case where your analysis changed a decision — a cut, an investment, a price change — and give the measured result.

How do you build a forecast when the data is messy or incomplete?

Describe triangulating from multiple sources, stating assumptions explicitly, and giving a range with drivers rather than one false-precision number.

What tools do you use beyond Excel?

Name your actual stack — SQL, Power BI, an FP&A platform like Anaplan or Adaptive — and one thing you automated with it.

How would you evaluate whether a project is worth investing in?

Reference NPV, IRR, and payback, but emphasize the quality of assumptions and the sensitivity analysis around them.

Resume tips that move the needle

For financial analysts specifically — generic advice costs you here

01

Tie each analysis to the decision it informed and the dollar impact, not just the deliverable produced.

02

Name the budgets or P&L size you supported so scope is clear, for example a $40M cost center.

03

Show the modeling itself: three-statement models, scenario analysis, or driver-based forecasts you built from scratch.

04

Quantify process wins, like cutting the monthly reporting cycle by automating with SQL or Power Query.

05

List CFA or FMVA progress if applicable; even level one signals seriousness for analyst roles.
