Interview questions worth rehearsing

With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for

Walk me through your month-end close process.

Describe the sequence you own — accruals, reconciliations, review, reporting — and your typical close timeline. Mention anything you did to shorten or clean it up.

How do you handle a reconciliation that will not balance?

Show a methodical approach: isolate the period, check common culprits like timing and duplicates, and document the resolution rather than plugging the difference.

Explain the difference between accrual and cash basis accounting.

Give the textbook distinction, then a quick example of how the same transaction lands differently under each. Keep it crisp.

Tell me about a time you found an error in the books.

Explain how you spotted it, quantified the impact, corrected it with proper entries, and what control you suggested so it would not recur.

What accounting systems have you worked in?

Name the systems and what you did in them — entries, reports, closes — not just exposure. Mention any migration or implementation experience.

How do you stay current with accounting standards?

Cite concrete habits: CPE courses, firm updates, or following FASB changes relevant to your industry. One recent standard you adapted to makes it credible.

How do you handle pressure during close or audit season?

Talk about preparation and checklists rather than heroics: reconciling throughout the month and keeping schedules audit-ready reduces the crunch.

Resume tips that move the needle

For accountants specifically — generic advice costs you here

01

State the scope of the books you managed: revenue size, entity count, or number of accounts reconciled monthly.

02

Quantify close improvements, such as reducing close from ten days to six.

03

Name your systems and Excel depth specifically; 'QuickBooks, NetSuite, pivot tables, XLOOKUP' beats 'proficient in Excel'.

04

List CPA status or progress prominently, including exams passed if you are mid-license.

05

Include one audit interaction, such as preparing PBC schedules with no material adjustments.
