Interview questions worth rehearsing

With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for

Walk me through your pre-trip inspection routine.

Give a real sequence: brakes, tires, lights, coupling, fluids, load securement. A specific answer shows the habit is real, not memorized for the test.

How do you manage your hours of service on a tight delivery window?

Explain how you plan the trip around your available clock and communicate early if a window is not legally reachable. Compliance over heroics.

Tell me about driving in severe weather. When do you decide to shut down?

Say plainly that you slow down or park when conditions are unsafe, and that you notify dispatch. Carriers want drivers who protect the load and the license.

Have you had any accidents or violations? What happened?

Answer honestly and briefly, then explain what changed in your driving afterward. They will see the MVR anyway; candor is the test.

How do you stay alert on long hauls?

Talk about real habits: sleep discipline, planned breaks, and stopping when fatigued. Avoid any answer that sounds like pushing through tiredness.

What experience do you have with different trailer types or freight?

List what you have pulled, such as dry van, reefer, or flatbed, and any securement or temperature-control specifics that came with it.

05

Resume tips that move the needle

For truck drivers specifically — generic advice costs you here

01

State your CDL class and endorsements up front, such as Hazmat, tanker, or doubles/triples.

02

Quantify safe miles driven and years without a preventable accident.

03

List equipment experience by trailer type: dry van, reefer, flatbed, or tanker.

04

Mention a current DOT medical card and a clean MVR if you have one.

05

Include ELD platforms you have used, like Samsara or Motive, and any trainer or mentor duties.

06

Where this role goes

01 CDL Student Driver
02 Company Driver
03 Lead or Trainer Driver
