Interview questions worth rehearsing
With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for
Walk me through diagnosing an intermittent check-engine light.
Show the process: pull codes and freeze frame, verify the complaint, test the suspect circuit, and confirm the fix. Avoid sounding like a parts-swapper.
Which ASE certifications do you hold or plan to take?
List them plainly, and if you are working toward Master Technician, give the timeline. Shops often pay more per certification.
How many flag hours do you typically turn in a week?
Give an honest number with context about the shop's workflow. Efficiency near or above 100% is the benchmark most managers use.
What is your experience with hybrid or electric vehicles?
Mention any high-voltage safety training or manufacturer courses. If none, express clear interest; every shop is planning for this.
Tell me about a comeback you had. What did you learn?
Own it, name the missed step, and describe your verification habit now, like road-testing to reproduce the original complaint.
How do you explain a costly repair to a skeptical customer?
Talk about showing the worn part or the data, prioritizing safety items, and giving options. Trust drives repeat work and your hours.

Resume tips that move the needle
For auto mechanics specifically — generic advice costs you here

02
State your flag-hour efficiency; anything near or above 100% belongs on the resume.
03
Name brands and specialties, such as European makes, diesels, or transmissions.
04
Mention hybrid or EV training and high-voltage safety qualification; demand is climbing.
05
Note that you own your tools and a current driver's license, since most shops require both.
06
