Interview questions worth rehearsing

With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for

Show me your portfolio. How do you choose what goes in it?

Curate ruthlessly toward the work you want to be hired for. Explain your selection logic; it reveals your eye.

How do you handle a shoot when conditions go wrong, like bad weather or a broken light?

Give a real story of adapting on the spot. Preparedness, backups, and calm problem-solving are what clients pay for.

Walk me through your lighting setup for a typical portrait or product shot.

Be specific about modifiers, ratios, and why. Technical fluency separates professionals from enthusiasts.

How do you direct people who are nervous in front of the camera?

Talk about building rapport, giving simple physical prompts, and shooting through awkwardness until subjects relax.

What does your editing and delivery workflow look like?

Cover culling, color, retouching standards, turnaround times, and how you deliver and archive files.

How do you scope and price a job, and handle usage rights?

Show you understand licensing, deliverable counts, and revision limits. Business literacy matters, especially for staff-plus-freelance roles.

Resume tips that move the needle

For photographers specifically — generic advice costs you here

01

Link a genre-focused portfolio; a tight product or portrait gallery beats a broad mix for staff roles.

02

List published or commercial work with client names where contracts allow.

03

Include your gear and studio competencies briefly, especially lighting, since job posts often specify them.

04

Quantify output, such as images delivered per shoot or e-commerce SKUs photographed per week.

05

Mention retouching and file management skills; many in-house roles are half post-production.

06

Where this role goes

Typical progression

01 Photo Assistant
02 Photographer
03 Senior Photographer
04 Photo Lead / Studio Manager
