What employers ask for
The skills these listings keep naming
Interview questions worth rehearsing
With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for
Which processes and positions are you certified in?
Be exact: process, position (such as 3G or 6G), and the code, like AWS D1.1. Offer to take a weld test on the spot; most shops will give one anyway.
How do you prepare a joint for a clean structural weld?
Cover cleaning to bright metal, bevel and gap per the WPS, and proper fit-up and tacking. Prep discipline predicts x-ray results.
What do you check when your welds start getting porosity?
Walk the causes: gas flow and leaks, contaminated base metal, wire or electrode condition, drafts. Systematic beats trial and error.
Tell me about the tightest-tolerance fabrication you have done.
Describe the part, the tolerance, and how you controlled distortion with sequencing, clamping, or heat management.
How do you read a WPS, and why does it matter?
Explain that it sets the qualified parameters: process, filler, amperage, position. Working inside it keeps the weld, and the certification, valid.
What is your experience with inspection, like bend tests or x-ray?
Give your pass rates if you know them, and describe fixing a failed test. Owning results shows shop maturity.
Resume tips that move the needle
For welders specifically — generic advice costs you here
List AWS certifications precisely: code, process, and position, such as D1.1 3G/4G FCAW.
State your processes with hours or years each: MIG, TIG, stick, flux-core.
Name the materials you weld: carbon steel, stainless, aluminum, or exotic alloys.
Quantify quality with x-ray or bend-test pass rates on pipe or structural work.
Mention fabrication skills beyond the arc: fit-up, layout, and print reading.
Include industry context, such as structural steel, pipeline, shipyard, or production fab.
