Interview questions worth rehearsing

With the thing the interviewer is actually listening for

A production line is down and every minute costs money. Walk me through your response.

Show a calm sequence: make it safe, gather symptoms from the operator, isolate the fault, and communicate an honest ETA while you work.

What is your strongest trade area, and where are you still developing?

Multi-craft roles expect a spike and gaps. Name your strength with an example and show you are actively closing a specific gap.

How do you approach preventive maintenance versus reactive repairs?

Explain that disciplined PMs reduce breakdowns, and describe following schedules in a CMMS while still documenting what you find.

Describe your experience with electrical troubleshooting.

Be specific about voltages you work with, reading schematics, using a multimeter, and where your comfort level ends. Overclaiming here is dangerous.

Tell me about a repair where you had to improvise safely.

Pick a story where you made a temporary fix, flagged it clearly, and followed up with the proper repair. Judgment plus follow-through.

What CMMS or work order systems have you used?

Name them and mention your documentation habits. Managers rely on your notes for parts, history, and audits.

05

Resume tips that move the needle

For maintenance technicians specifically — generic advice costs you here

01

List your trade coverage explicitly: electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and PLCs if applicable.

02

Include certifications like EPA 608, OSHA 10/30, or boiler operator licenses.

03

Quantify uptime or downtime reductions you contributed to on specific equipment.

04

Name the CMMS platforms you have used, such as Maximo, Fiix, or UpKeep.

05

Mention the environment: manufacturing plant, hospital, apartment complex, or commercial facility, since employers filter on it.
